Walnut is one of the best hardwoods harvested in North America. Its signature dark brown colour is what makes it so unique compared to other North American hardwoods. Common uses for walnut include flooring, caninetry, and musical intruments.
Cherry is a beautiful golden hardwood, and it grows in Canada and USA. Its properties also make it one of the best woods for cutting boards. It is highly prized by woodworkers all around the world due to its magnificent colour and smooth grain. Its main uses include toys, furniture, flooring, and musical instruments
Maple hardwood is the king of cutting boards. It is grown in Canada as well as USA. The properties of maple are perfect for the use and abuse cutting boards take. It is very hard, but no too hard where it will dull the knife. Its other uses include surfaces that absorb rough impacts such as flooring for bowling alleys. It's also where maple syrup comes from...yum.
The Sunny Day Board has quite the history to it. When I was first starting Panda Woodworks in April 2019, the design I had in mind was the design of the Sunny Day Board. It was first design I came up with, and one of my personal proudest designs. A first version of the Sunny Day board was the first ever cutting board I've made, and is in the picture below:
It was awesome, but I wasn't satisified enough to sell it. There were some gaps and I had a lot of improving to do in my woodworking. I made a second version of the Sunny Day Board back in December 2019. I thought I knew exactly how to do it, and I was convinced that it would be perfect. Below is the picture of the second version of the Sunny Day Board:
It was better... but I still wasn't satisifed. There were still major gaps in the board, and it humbled me hard. For the months following Christmas 2019, I extensively practiced my joints in woodworking. I probably spent one hundred hours learning and practicing my jointing skills, even in the freezing cold in my garage. Eventually, I came to a point where I was consistently getting perfect wood joints in my woodworking projects, and so I began to reinvent the Sunny Day Board. And that brings us to today - The Sunny Day Board is a sentiment to all of the hard work I put into learning woodworking!
